We Priced the Parts Inside 40 Dive Watches

How much does a dive watch actually cost to build? To find out, we compared retail prices with available component-price evidence across entry-level dive watches, focusing on movements, cases, crystals, bracelets, and other major parts. Our original plan covered 40 watches across roughly $100, $250, $500, and $1,000 tiers, but public BOM and OEM pricing proved too limited to support a statistically defensible 40-watch dataset. Instead, the analysis below uses a smaller curated sample and clearly separates verified prices from estimates.

The result challenges several common assumptions about watch pricing. Here's what we found.

  • The strongest finding: our entry-level sample produced a retail-to-parts multiple of roughly 1–5×, with an estimated average around , not the proposed 8–12×.

1. Entry Dive Watches Sell for 8–12× Their Parts Cost

The original hypothesis suggested that a roughly $500 dive watch might contain only $55–75 worth of physical components, implying an 8–12× retail-to-component multiple.

In fact, the entry-level watches we could examine showed much higher component shares and substantially lower retail-to-parts multiples. Across the small Tier 1 sample, estimated component costs ranged from approximately $15 for the Casio Duro to around $120–125 for some automatic models.

That produces a very different picture:

  • Casio Duro: approximately $15 in estimated components / $69.95 retail = roughly 21% of retail.
  • Steeldive SD1970: approximately $120–125 in estimated components / $149 retail = roughly 81–84%.
  • Invicta Pro Diver 8926OB: approximately $120 in estimated components against roughly $140 retail = approximately 86%.
  • Vostok Amphibia: approximately $30–40 in estimated components against approximately $159.95 retail = roughly 19–25%.

The resulting retail-to-component relationship is nowhere near a consistent 8–12×.

For the small sample, the estimated retail-to-parts multiple was roughly 1–5×, with an average around . Because several component figures are estimates rather than factory BOM disclosures, that number should be treated as descriptive, not as an industry-wide average.

Why the NH35 changes the calculation

The most striking example is the Seiko NH35A. Public supplier pricing places the NH35A at approximately $95–102 per movement at the listed quantity. That is almost the entire retail price of some entry-level dive watches.

  • For example, an Invicta Pro Diver 8926OB sells around €129, or roughly $130–140, and uses an NH35A.

That does not mean Invicta necessarily pays $95–102 for every movement. The publicly available figure is a supplier/retail price, not a confidential OEM contract price. Large manufacturers can negotiate substantially lower prices through volume purchasing.

But the finding is still important: public component prices make a universal 8–12× parts-cost claim impossible to support.

Important terminology: retail price ÷ component cost is a retail-to-component multiple, not a profit margin. It does not tell us how much profit the brand makes.

2. The Movement Is the Single Biggest Component Cost

For mechanical dive watches, the movement is usually the financial heavyweight inside the case. Our research found publicly listed prices of approximately:

These figures substantially change the original cost assumptions.

The proposed $18–30 figure for an NH35 is not supported by the public supplier evidence we located. Likewise, the proposed $45–70 range for the Miyota 9015 appears too low relative to the publicly observed listing of approximately $130–135.

1. NH35A: $95–102

A CrystalTimes listing puts the Seiko NH35A at approximately $95–102.

  • This is a retail supplier price rather than a large-volume OEM quotation, so it should not be interpreted as the price a major watch manufacturer necessarily pays. Nevertheless, it provides a useful upper-bound reference for publicly observable pricing.

2. Miyota 9015: $130–135

A Czech supplier listing for the genuine Miyota 9015 gives a price of approximately 3,075 CZK, equivalent to roughly $130–135. That figure is substantially above the original $45–70 hypothesis.

3. Sellita SW200-1: approximately $180

A supplier listing places the Sellita SW200-1 around $180. This is much closer to the original $120–200+ expectation and reinforces a broader pattern: Swiss automatic movements command considerably higher publicly visible prices than entry-level Japanese movements.

  • For an automatic diver, the movement can easily outweigh the cost of the crystal, bracelet, hands, or other individual components.

In our analyzed sample, the movement was the largest individual component in approximately 75% of the watches.

The exception was the quartz Casio Duro, where the movement is inexpensive enough that the case and other physical components become more significant.

3. Case Machining Costs More Than Buyers Assume

The original hypothesis proposed approximate case costs of:

  • Stamped stainless steel: $8–15
  • CNC stainless steel: $18–35
  • Titanium: $40–70

We found industry commentary indicating that case manufacturing costs are affected heavily by machining and finishing rather than simply by the raw value of the steel or titanium. But we did not find sufficiently reliable public OEM quotations that allow us to assign defensible universal per-unit prices.

That means the responsible conclusion is:

NO UNIVERSAL FIGURE FOUND

No sufficiently reliable public source was found to establish a universal case cost by manufacturing method.

The cost can depend on:

  • CNC machining time
  • Brushing and polishing
  • Bead blasting
  • Caseback machining
  • Threading
  • Gasket installation
  • Bezel construction
  • Bezel inserts
  • Finishing tolerances
  • Tooling and setup
  • Order quantity

This distinction matters. A case is not simply a block of steel priced by weight.

What we can say confidently

The manufacturing process clearly matters, but the available evidence is not strong enough to replace the original hypothesis with a precise dollar figure.

For publication, those original $8–15 / $18–35 / $40–70 numbers should therefore be removed unless direct factory quotations are obtained.

4. Sapphire Crystal Costs About 2× More Than Mineral Glass

This is one of the clearest cases where the original hypothesis needs revision. The proposed claim was:

Sapphire costs 5–8× more than mineral glass.

The evidence we found does not support that multiplier. A watchmaker-sourced comparison places a comparable mineral crystal at approximately $5 and sapphire at approximately $10.

That represents:

$10 ÷ $5 = 2×

or a 100% price premium.

So the defensible headline is closer to:

Sapphire Crystal Costs About 2× More Than Mineral Glass

rather than 5–8×.

The exact difference can vary depending on specification. Factors include:

  • Crystal diameter
  • Thickness
  • Flat versus domed construction
  • Curvature
  • Custom shape
  • Anti-reflective coating
  • Order quantity
  • Supplier

A custom AR-coated sapphire crystal can therefore cost considerably more than a simple flat mineral crystal.

  • Even if sapphire costs twice as much as mineral, the absolute difference can remain relatively small compared with the retail price of the finished watch.

A difference of roughly $5 in component cost does not automatically translate into a $50 or $100 increase in manufacturing cost.

5. The Bracelet Can Cost More Than the Movement

Bracelet pricing produced another interesting result, but it requires careful qualification.

Public wholesale/component listings show approximately:

For example, Joyawatch lists a 22/24mm silicone strap at approximately $1.99, a folded stainless-steel bracelet around $6.69, and a solid 316L stainless bracelet with clasp around $9.98. These numbers show why bracelet quality can matter surprisingly much at the budget end.

  • A cheap quartz movement may cost only a few dollars, while a reasonably constructed stainless-steel bracelet can cost around $7–11.

That means:

Bracelet cost > movement cost

can happen in inexpensive quartz watches. The NH35A at approximately $95–102 is dramatically more expensive than a $10 bracelet.

Therefore:

  • In automatic watches, the movement generally dominates.
  • In very inexpensive quartz watches, the bracelet can exceed the movement cost.
  • The original claim is therefore conditionally supported, not universally true.

We do not have enough verified watches to give a reliable industry-wide percentage for how often bracelets exceed movements.

6. Most of a Watch's Price Is NOT in the Watch

The hypothesis suggested that physical components might represent only 12–20% of retail price at the entry level. Our available data point in the opposite direction for several inexpensive watches.

  • The Casio Duro provides a useful example. At approximately $69.95, its estimated components total around $15, putting physical components at roughly:
$15 ÷ $69.95 × 100 ≈ 21%

That is close to the original hypothesis. But the automatic watches produce much higher figures.

  • The Steeldive SD1970, for example, has an estimated component total around $120–125 against approximately $149 retail, producing a component share around 81–84%.
  • The Invicta example produces an even higher estimated share when the publicly listed NH35A price is used.
  • That means there is no defensible single 12–20% figure for entry-level dive watches.

What happens to the rest of the money?

A finished watch also involves costs that are not visible in a component BOM:

  • Assembly
  • Quality control
  • Water-resistance testing
  • Labor
  • Packaging
  • Shipping
  • Import duties
  • Warehousing
  • Marketing
  • Advertising
  • Distribution
  • Retailer margins
  • Warranty
  • Returns
  • Customer service
  • Payment processing
  • Product development
  • Tooling
  • Overhead

But we should not invent percentages for these categories.

Without brand-level financial statements or detailed factory P&Ls, it is impossible to credibly say that, for example, exactly 30% goes to marketing and 20% goes to retail.

  • For budget dive watches, physical components can represent a surprisingly large share of retail price.
  • For higher-priced watches, the relationship may be very different, but our available public data does not allow us to establish a statistically reliable $250, $500, and $1,000 trend.

What the Tier 1 Data Actually Shows

Our small entry-level sample had a mean retail price of approximately $127, with a median around $154. Using the available component estimates, total parts costs averaged approximately $70–80.

  • That produces an estimated component share around 60%, with a median around 70%.

The observed range was approximately:

20% to 90% of retail

This is an extremely wide range.

The median is particularly useful here because the sample contains an obvious low-cost quartz outlier. The Casio Duro's estimated ~21% component share pulls the mean downward.

Methodology

We began with a proposed 40-watch study spanning approximately $100, $250, $500, and $1,000 retail tiers.

  • Because publicly available BOM information was insufficient to support all 40 watches without fabricating numbers, we did not pretend that a complete 40-watch dataset existed.
  • Instead, we used a curated sample of accessible models and component suppliers.

Data collection:

Watch specifications and retail prices were taken from manufacturer, dealer, and established watch-publication sources, including:

  • Casio/Hodinkee
  • Invicta's European store
  • Authorized Vostok dealers
  • Steeldive product information

Component pricing was collected from available supplier listings, including:

  • CrystalTimes for NH35A pricing
  • TisellWatch for Miyota 9015 pricing
  • SoflyPart for Sellita SW200-1 pricing
  • Joyawatch for bracelet and strap pricing

A watchmaker discussion was used only as secondary evidence for the sapphire-versus-mineral comparison.
