How Deadly Is Diving, Really? We Cross-Referenced a Decade of Death Data.
Everyone quotes scary numbers about scuba diving and snorkeling. Almost nobody puts them next to how many people actually take part. So we did — and the honest risk picture turns out to be the opposite of the headlines.
The Featured Finding
More than 200 people have died snorkeling in Hawaii over the past decade — roughly 9 in 10 of them visitors — making snorkeling the state's deadliest ocean activity, ahead of scuba and freediving combined. Yet per participant, scuba diving is the riskier sport.
To understand how risky underwater recreation really is, we pulled the most authoritative fatality and participation data we could find for three activities — scuba diving, snorkeling, and freediving — and set them against each other.
Our sources include the Divers Alert Network (DAN) Annual Diving Reports, CDC drowning data, the World Health Organization, the U.S. National Weather Service, a Hawaii state snorkel-safety study, peer-reviewed medical reviews, and national participation surveys — spanning 2014 through 2026, covering both U.S. and worldwide figures. Then we did the one thing those individual reports never do: we divided the deaths by the number of participants, to get a death rate per 100,000 people — the only fair way to compare one activity against another.
Here's what the data showed.
Key findings at a glance
- More than 200 people have died snorkeling in Hawaii in the last decade — about 90% visitors — the deadliest ocean activity in the islands, ahead of scuba and freediving combined.
- Adjusted for participants, the picture flips: scuba diving is several times deadlier per person than snorkeling — roughly 1.8 vs. 0.5 deaths per 100,000 U.S. participants a year.

Finding 01 · The Featured Stat
Snorkeling Is Hawaii's Deadliest Ocean Activity — Deadlier Than Scuba and Freediving Combined
Background
Hawaii keeps unusually detailed records of ocean deaths, which makes it the closest thing we have to a controlled sample for comparing water activities in one place. We looked at how snorkeling deaths there stack up against scuba and freediving.
Results
More than 200 visitors have died while snorkeling in Hawaii over the past decade — an average of about 20 to 22 a year. Scuba and freediving deaths in the same waters run in the low single digits. Snorkeling is the leading cause of ocean death for visitors to the islands.
In Hawaii, snorkeling kills more visitors than scuba diving and freediving combined.

Context
This is counterintuitive because snorkeling is widely seen as the safe, casual option — the thing you do when you're not ready to scuba dive. That perception is part of what makes it dangerous. People enter the water with no training, often for the first time, in conditions they've never read before.
Finding 02 · The Reversal
But Per Person, Scuba Diving Is Actually Deadlier Than Snorkeling
Background
Raw death counts mislead when far more people snorkel than scuba dive. To compare the two fairly, we divided annual U.S. deaths by U.S. participants for each activity.
Results
With about 7.5 million American snorkelers and 3.1 million scuba divers in 2023, scuba works out to roughly 1.8 deaths per 100,000 participants a year, against about 0.5 for snorkeling. Scuba carries a meaningfully higher per-person death rate — even though snorkeling produces the bigger headline numbers in places like Hawaii.
Adjusted for how many people take part, scuba diving has a higher death rate than snorkeling.

Context
Both facts are true at once: snorkeling causes more total tourist deaths in hotspots, while scuba is riskier per individual outing. Which number matters depends on who's asking — a tourism board and an individual diver are looking at completely different denominators.
Finding 03 · Baseline Risk
Scuba's Baseline Risk Is Low — Roughly One Death in 200,000 Dives
Background
Per-participant rates still don't capture how often someone dives. The most-cited safety benchmark in the field is deaths per dive.
Results
Context
For perspective, that per-dive risk sits broadly alongside other adventure sports and well below activities people rarely think twice about. Scuba's reputation for recklessness isn't what the numbers show.
Finding 04 · The Trend
Worldwide Scuba Deaths Have Held Between Roughly 90 and 190 a Year
Background
We wanted a defensible multi-year trend rather than a single year that might be an outlier, so we used DAN's yearly monitoring as our one source of truth for scuba.
Results
Global recreational scuba fatalities ranged from about 146 in 2014 to 189 in 2018, dipping to roughly 116 in 2020 when the pandemic cut diving activity. The U.S. and Canada consistently account for around 55 of those.
Worldwide scuba deaths have stayed broadly flat for a decade — the 2020 dip tracks fewer dives, not safer ones.

Context
There's no evidence the sport is getting more dangerous over time. If anything, the flat line across a decade of rising participation suggests the opposite.
Finding 05 · The Undercount
U.S. Snorkeling Deaths Are Almost Certainly Undercounted
Background
There is no national registry for snorkeling deaths, so we compared the best available national dataset against a single, well-documented state.
Results
DAN's dataset averages about 10 snorkeling deaths a year nationally — but Hawaii alone accounts for roughly twice that. A national figure can't be complete when one state exceeds it.
Context
That gap is itself a finding. The real snorkeling toll is likely several times higher than official numbers suggest, which is part of why the activity's risk gets underestimated in the first place.
Finding 06 · The Contested Cause
The Leading Suspected Cause May Not Be Drowning at All — But Experts Disagree
Background
The intuitive assumption is that snorkelers drown by inhaling water. A Hawaii state study challenged that directly.
Results
That study attributes most Hawaii snorkeling deaths to rapid-onset pulmonary edema (ROPE) — the lungs filling with fluid from the inside — naming it the likely cause in 29 of 32 cases examined. A separate Australian analysis of 91 deaths, however, found the evidence didn't support ROPE as the dominant cause, pointing instead to cardiac disease, ordinary drowning, and snorkeling alone.
Context
The disagreement matters, and we're not going to paper over it: ROPE is nearly impossible to confirm at autopsy, so both camps are working from incomplete evidence. What they agree on is more useful than what they dispute — age, heart health, and snorkeling solo are the recurring risk factors regardless of the final mechanism.

Finding 07 · Who Dies
The Typical Victim Is Middle-Aged With a Heart Condition — Not a Daredevil
Background
Demographics tell you who's actually at risk, which is what safety messaging should be aimed at.
Results
Scuba fatalities average age 54, are about 80% male, and 67% are over 50; roughly half are clinically obese. Snorkeling victims have a median age of 48, skew heavily male, and most had pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.
Context
The dominant risk factor across both activities is cardiac, not technical. The person most in danger isn't the beginner doing something wild — it's an older participant whose heart meets sudden, unfamiliar strain.
Finding 08 · Unfamiliar Water
Around 9 in 10 of Hawaii's Snorkeling Victims Are Visitors
Background
If unfamiliar water is a real risk factor, tourist status should show up in the data. It does.
Results
Context
First-timers in unfamiliar conditions — different currents, temperature, and rented gear they've never worn — carry the highest risk. If there's one actionable takeaway for anyone booking a trip, it's this one.
Finding 09 · Not the Gear
Equipment Failure Barely Registers — Your Heart Is the Bigger Risk
Background
New divers and snorkelers often worry about gear malfunction. We checked whether the data justifies the fear.
Results
Equipment failure and entanglement are, per DAN, extremely rare causes of death. Cardiac events and running out of air dominate the record instead.
Context
Reliable, well-maintained gear matters — but the data says health screening and fitness prevent far more deaths than any equipment upgrade. Know your specs, then know your heart.
Finding 10 · Experience
Half of Scuba Fatalities Involve Divers With Fewer Than 20 Dives
Background
We looked at whether experience level correlates with fatal outcomes.
Results
Roughly half of scuba fatalities involve divers with fewer than 20 logged dives, and about 40% happen after a diver becomes separated from a buddy.
Context
The riskiest window is early, and separation runs through the record like a thread. Staying with a buddy is one of the few interventions the data strongly backs.
Finding 11 · The Missing Number
Freediving May Be the Riskiest of All — But No One Measures It
Background
We tried to calculate a death rate for freediving the same way we did for scuba and snorkeling. We couldn't.
Results
National participation surveys don't track freediving at all, so there's no denominator to divide deaths by. What data exists points to a high per-outing risk from shallow-water blackout, and victims tend to be younger — average age around 38.
Context
The absence of data is the story. The activity that may carry the highest per-outing risk is also the one nobody is counting. That's a gap worth closing — and if you have participation data that could close it, we'd like to hear from you.

Methodology
How we did this
We compiled published fatality figures for scuba diving, snorkeling, and freediving from the Divers Alert Network, the CDC, the WHO, the U.S. National Weather Service, the Hawaii Snorkel Safety Study, and peer-reviewed medical literature, covering data from 2014 to 2026.
We then combined those counts with U.S. participation figures from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association to calculate deaths per 100,000 participants. Where sources conflicted, we used DAN's annual monitoring as the primary series for scuba and noted disagreements in the open rather than picking a favourite. Snorkeling and freediving rates should be read as estimates, given the absence of complete national registries — where a number is a floor or an approximation, we've said so.
