We Compared the Death Rates of 7 Adventure Sports: Here's Which Is Actually the Most Dangerous
An original analysis of fatality and participation data from the sports' own governing bodies and peer-reviewed studies, covering skydiving, scuba diving, rock climbing, surfing, BASE jumping, bungee jumping, paragliding and hang gliding.

Adventure sports are routinely called the most dangerous things you can do. But almost nobody puts the actual numbers side by side. So, we did actually. We pulled published fatality and participation data for seven adventure sports and lined them up to answer one question: measured against how many people actually do each sport, which is the deadliest?
We reviewed data from the sports' own governing bodies; the United States Parachute Association, the Divers Alert Network, the American Alpine Club and others. From peer-reviewed, studies published in journals including The Journal of Trauma is covering more than 70 years of skydiving records and academic mortality studies of surfing, scuba and BASE jumping.
Some of what we found matched the sports' reputations. A lot of it did not. Here's everything we learned.
Key Findings at a Glance

No one knows how risky BASE jumping really is, because the number of jumps worldwide has never been counted, a rare unmeasured risk in modern sport.
Adventure-sport deaths skew older and male: scuba fatalities are 88% male with a mean age of 44; over half of surfing deaths are age 55+.
Skydiving's deaths are overwhelmingly one preventable mistake: 64 of the last 20 years' fatalities came from high-performance canopy landings, not equipment failure.
Falling is the dominant killer in climbing: 4,707 of the accidents logged since 1951 were falls or slips on rock.
Skydiving is about 24 times safer than it was in 1961, when the rate was 11.1 deaths per 100,000 jumps versus 0.46 today.
Despite its reputation, skydiving is now remarkably safe: just 1 death for every ~217,000 jumps, safer, per attempt, than several sports with a far gentler image.

One caveat matters before the ranking: these sports are not all measured the same way. Skydiving, BASE and bungee are counted per jump; scuba, surfing and the gliding sports are counted per participant per year; climbing has no reliable participation denominator at all.

How Dangerous Is BASE Jumping? One Death for Every 2,317 Jumps
BASE jumping causes one death for every 2,317 jumps, about 43 deaths per 100,000 jumps, or roughly 90 times the fatality rate of modern skydiving, according to an 11-year study of the Kjerag Massif published in The Journal of Trauma.
Background
BASE jumping; parachuting from fixed objects like cliffs, bridges and antennas has long been called the world's most dangerous sport, but hard numbers are scarce because it is illegal or unregulated in most places. The most rigorous study analysed a single legal site: the Kjerag Massif in Norway.
Results
Over an 11-year period, researchers recorded 9 deaths across 20,850 jumps, a rate of one fatality for every 2,317 jumps, published in The Journal of Trauma. That is about 43 deaths per 100,000 jumps. A separate Swedish study put the annual risk at one death for every 60 active participants.
Context
For comparison, skydiving in 2025 saw 0.46 deaths per 100,000 jumps. On a per-jump basis, BASE jumping is therefore roughly 90 times deadlier than skydiving, the widest gap between any two sports in this study, and the clearest most dangerous verdict the data supports.

What Is the Scuba Diving Fatality Rate? About 16 Deaths per 100,000 Divers a Year, On Par With Jogging
Scuba diving causes about 16 deaths per 100,000 divers per year, statistically almost identical to the annual death rate for jogging (~13) and driving (~16), based on Divers Alert Network and British Sub-Aqua Club membership data.
Background
Scuba is often assumed to be high-risk because of its underwater, equipment-dependent nature. The Divers Alert Network (DAN) has tracked diving deaths for over 30 years, which lets us calculate a per-diver rate.
Results
Analyses of DAN and British Sub-Aqua Club membership put the rate at about 16 deaths per 100,000 divers per year. Measured per dive, estimates range from roughly 2 deaths per 100,000 dives down to under 2 per million dives, depending on the study. DAN recorded 146 diving deaths worldwide in its 2020 data year (a COVID-suppressed low).
Context
Sixteen deaths per 100,000 participants a year is almost identical to the rate for jogging (about 13) and for driving (about 16). In other words, the sport that feels risky sits at roughly the same level as two things most people do without a second thought, a classic case of perceived risk outrunning measured risk.
Are Paragliding and Hang Gliding Dangerous? As Deadly as Scuba, With a Fraction of the Participants
Paragliding causes 15 and hang gliding 16.7 deaths per 100,000 participants per year, level with scuba and above surfing, per 20 years of Australian aviation-safety data.
Background
Foot-launched flight is a small niche, so raw death counts look reassuringly low. But small participation numbers cut both ways: a handful of deaths among a few thousand pilots produces a high rate.
Results
Australian aviation-safety data recorded 12 paragliding and 5 hang gliding deaths over 20 years against roughly 4,000 paragliders and 1,500 hang glider pilots with rates of 15 and 16.7 deaths per 100,000 participants per year respectively. A US review put the combined figure at one death per 560 flights.
Context
These rates land right next to scuba's, and above surfing's, even though far fewer people fly. It is a reminder that a low body count is not the same as low risk, the denominator decides.
How Many People Die Rock Climbing? About 30 a Year, Almost Always From Falls
Rock climbing records about 30 deaths a year across the US and Canada with 2,069 climbers died between 1951 and 2019, and falls or slips on rock caused 4,707 of the accidents logged, per the American Alpine Club.
Background
The American Alpine Club has published Accidents in North American Climbing since 1948, giving one of the longest continuous safety records in any sport.
Results
Between 1951 and 2019 the club logged 2,069 deaths and 9,303 accidents across the US and Canada with an average of about 30 deaths per year. Falling or slipping on rock was the single biggest cause, behind 4,707 of those accidents. Against an estimated 6–10 million climbers, the per-person risk is low, but the participation figure is too loose to state a precise rate.
Context
Climbing's danger is concentrated and specific: it is overwhelmingly about falls, not gear failure or the exotic hazards the public imagines. That makes the risk unusually addressable through skill, protection and judgment.
Is Surfing Dangerous? It's One of the Safest, at 0.63 Deaths per 100,000 Surfers
Surfing causes 0.63 deaths per 100,000 surfers, one of the lowest rates studied with drowning behind 58% of deaths and 96% of the dead male, per a 16-year peer-reviewed Australian study.
Background
Surfing is done by tens of millions of people, so even a meaningful number of deaths produces a low rate. A peer-reviewed Australian study tracked surf and bodyboard deaths over 16 years.
Results
It found 155 deaths, a rate of 0.63 per 100,000 surfers (0.04 per 100,000 residents). Drowning was the leading cause at 58%, 96% of the dead were male, and 37% were aged 55 or older. A separate study put surf-beach drowning at 0.28 per 100,000 population for men.
Context
Surfing's real risk profile looks less like an extreme sport and more like a public-health question about older men, cardiac events and rip currents. The wipeouts make the highlight reels; the actual fatalities are quieter and largely preventable.
How Safe Is Bungee Jumping? Very, But Nobody Is Really Counting
Bungee jumping is estimated at roughly one death per 500,000 jumps, plausibly safer per attempt than skydiving, but no governing body publishes global fatality data, so this figure rests on the thinnest evidence of any sport here.
Background
Commercial bungee jumping is heavily regulated and feels dramatic, so it is widely assumed to be dangerous. Reliable data, however, is almost nonexistent, no governing body publishes global fatality statistics.
Results
The most commonly cited estimate is roughly one death per 500,000 jumps, against perhaps 500,000 jumps a year with one to two deaths annually worldwide. We flag these numbers as weak: the strongest-looking statistics pages online are unsourced and appear to be machine-generated.
Context
On the available evidence bungee jumping is one of the safer activities here, plausibly safer per attempt than skydiving. But the honest headline is the data gap itself, an entire commercial adventure industry operating without public safety numbers.
The Biggest Blind Spot: No One Knows How Many People BASE Jump
The BASE Fatality List has recorded 458 deaths worldwide since 1981, but the total number of BASE jumps made each year has never been measured, so a true global fatality rate for the sport cannot be calculated.
Background
Every fatality rate needs two numbers: deaths, and how many people were exposed. For most sports we have both. For BASE jumping, we have only one.
Results

Context
This is the study's most important structural finding. The sport with the fearsome reputation is also the one we understand least, statistically. Its danger is real and well documented at the site level, but its overall risk remains, literally, uncounted.

Skydiving keeps the cleanest long-run safety record of any sport here, thanks to the USPA's annual member survey of jumps and fatalities going back to 1961.
Results
In 1961 the rate was 11.1 deaths per 100,000 jumps. In 2025 it was 0.46, about a 24-fold improvement, even as annual jumps rose to 3.47 million. That works out to roughly one death per 217,000 jumps today; 2024 was the first single-digit year on record with just 9 deaths.
Context
The improvement isn't luck. Automatic activation devices, reserve static lines and canopy-control training account for most of the drop. It is one of the clearest examples in any sport of technology and training bending a fatality curve down over decades.

Context
The lesson running through this whole study is that reputation and risk are only loosely related. The sports that feel most extreme (BASE) can be the deadliest; or, like skydiving and bungee, far safer per attempt than the public assumes, while quiet activities like scuba and paragliding carry more risk than their calm image implies.
The Bottom Line: Studied the Death Rates of 7 Adventurous Sports
Across seven adventure sports, the clearest verdict is that BASE jumping stands alone at the dangerous end; while surfing and modern skydiving sit at the safe end, often the opposite of their public reputations. Just as important are the gaps: BASE jumping's missing participation data and bungee jumping's missing safety records mean two of the sports people fear most are also the ones we measure least.
A note on method: because these sports are counted in different units, this study reports each on its strongest available figure rather than a single forced ranking. Methodology
We set out to compare fatality risk across adventure sports using published data only. For each sport we sought two figures; annual deaths and participation, prioritising primary sources (a sport's own governing body or a peer-reviewed study) over secondary reporting.
Primary sources included: the United States Parachute Association (skydiving deaths and jump volume, 1961–2025); the Divers Alert Network and StatPearls (scuba fatalities and rates); the American Alpine Club's Accidents in North American Climbing (climbing deaths, 1951–2019); peer-reviewed mortality studies of surfing and bodyboarding and of BASE jumping at the Kjerag Massif, published in journals including The Journal of Trauma; and Australian aviation-safety data for paragliding and hang gliding.
Rates are reported exactly as the source expressed them (per jump, per dive, per participant per year, or raw annual count). We did not convert between bases, because doing so would require participation estimates that don't reliably exist for every sport. Where data was weak or a denominator was missing, notably bungee jumping and BASE-jumping participation, we say so rather than publish a false precision.
